FAQs

What are my responsibilities?

As parents, you are responsible for ensuring the enjoyment of your child’s hockey experience. You must bring your child to their practices and games and other hockey events, as indicated. You must sign a Fair Play Code of Conduct at registration and pay any team fees identified by your coaching team.

Why do I have to pay extra “team fees”?

Team fees are to cover the extra cost of tournaments, extra ice, special events and other incidentals the team has agreed upon at the parents meeting.

Can I volunteer with my child’s team?

Yes! Volunteers are important to the OMHA. Please contact your coach to express your interest in volunteering with the team. All volunteers working within a vulnerable sector must complete a Police Record Check (Level 3). More information on Volunteering is available HERE.

Do I need to complete Hockey Canada’s Respect in Sport (RIS) for Parents

Yes, this online training program is mandatory for all new parents to hockey to ensure the safety and well-being of players and to encourage respectful communication with officials and coaches. Players over the age of 16 years must complete this training. Please note that if you took RIS for another sport you do not have to do it again, but you have to "register" your certificate number with your association.

Parent’s Guide to Discipline:

At the beginning of every year during registration you will be asked to read and accept the Parent’s Guide of Discipline. This guide also encompasses the extended family. In addition, HEO made available a Code of Conduct for Parents. Finally, please be aware that, according to the HEO's Portable Digital Devices Policy, while mobile devides are permitted in the dressing rooms, it is prohibited to take photographs, make video or audio recordings in any recreational facility dressing rooms during any HEO sanctioned event.

Sportsmanship in the stands:

As an association, we fully expect that all members follow the code of discipline that is signed at the beginning of the year. If a situation or complaint does occur you might be summoned to hearing for a disciplinary hearing once an investigation has occurred.

Are the arenas local? How much travel can I expect in House League?

The arenas are local at the House League level. We are part of the Gloucester Hockey Association (GHA), which consist of Russell, Metcalfe, Leitrim, Blackburn, Gloucester Center and Orleans (see Arenas section of our website). The only travel outside of that will be for out-of-town tournaments, which will depend on the team (will be discussed at the parents meeting at the beginning of the hockey season).

My child plays House League, do I have to attend out-of-town tournaments?

Most players and families enjoy the experience of attending out-of-town tournaments. Please notify your coach if you choose not to participate; please note that no refunds from team fees can be issued to those families who do not attend.

I have a complaint or concern, who should I talk to?

The first recourse is to talk to your team manager and head coach. If they cannot help, please contact the Director of your respective division.

What is the coach evaluation process?

The coach evaluation is usually completed by parents before the beginning of playoffs. This might be electronically or paper base.  We encourage all parents to complete the evaluations as part of our coach development process. All evaluations are kept confidential and reviewed by the board of directors of the OMHA.
