What is the objective of Player Evaluations?
Player Evaluations are performed prior to the start of each hockey season. The objective of Player Evaluations is to perform a fair and impartial assessment of the players’ hockey skill set in order to create balanced and competitive teams, but most importantly to ensure the player finds him or herself at a level at which they are comfortable and will have fun.
As a parent, what advice should you give to a player heading into evaluations?
Quite simply put, “Just try your best”. Its sage advice, it applies to everything. Perhaps the only thing to add is to not focus or get hung up on a perceived result.
When are player evaluations taking place?
Player evaluations are scheduled to start the weekend of September 12th/13th. Specific session times will be assigned and posted on the OMHA website in advance of each session.
*Please arrive 30min prior to start of session in order to have players sign-in and pick up their assigned pinnies.

How long will the evaluation process take?
Our hope is to have the evaluation process completed in two weeks. That said, if it’s deemed that more time is required to suitably complete the process, then further sessions may be necessary.
How will groups be determined for the evaluations?
For the first sessions on Saturday, September 12th, groups will essentially be divided alphabetically. The purpose of this is to ensure a fair representation of the full range of players’ skill level for each session. This division is especially important to note for new players & parents, please try not to be discouraged by the varying level of the players on the ice during this first session. Sunday’s sessions (Sept. 13th) will have groups divided based on Saturday’s assessments, where players will then be on the ice with other players that should be at a closer level to each other.
This is just a starting point, please remember that this is a 2 week proc ess (minimum). If anyone is worried that perhaps a player was not at his or her best during a particular session, this is a fluid process where every opportunity will be there for things to change.
What skills are being evaluated?
The hockey skills that will be focused on and used as a base for evaluation are Forward Skating, Stopping, Turning, Stick Handling, and Game Play (general ability in game-type situations).
How will the on-ice evaluation sessions be structured?
The first sessions on Saturday, Sept. 12th will consist of a couple drills that will allow the evaluators to systematically assess the players with regard to the aforementioned skills. Warning for Players/Parents: unlike regular practices, there will b e a fair bit of lining up and waiting on the part of the players during this first session.
After these first sessions, provided satisfactory results were achieved, the plan is to have the players participate in game-type play as soon as possible. This will likely be the format for the remaining evaluations se ssions, starting with those on Sunday, Sept. 13th.
Who will be conducting the evaluations?
· On-ice coaches will be explaining, demonstrating, and running the players through the various drills.
· Off-ice evaluators will be responsible for evaluating each player on the ice during the time allotted. To ensure a fair and impartial assessment of the players, the evaluators will be non-parent volunteers (i.e. they will not have a child playing at the level being evaluated).
· Off-ice administrators will be responsible for scheduling the sessions, tracking evaluations, and communicating with parents and players.
What should players wear to the evaluation?
Full equipment is always mandatory. This includes:
· Protective Cup
· Shin Pads
· Hockey Socks
· Hockey Pants
· Skates (*might suggest ensuring that skates have been recently sharpened)
· Shoulder Pads
· Elbow Pads
· Practice Jersey
· Hockey Gloves
· CSA Approved Helmet w/ Full Face Shield
· Neck Guard
· Mouth Guard* (OMHA requires a mouth guard to be worn)
How are players/parents notified of their standing within the process?
As groups are formed based on the evaluations of previous sessions, we will continue to update the “Directors Pages” section on the OMHA Website as quickly as possible. Given the short turn-around from Saturday to Sunday, we urge you to check the website regularly for updated schedules.
How soon after the evaluations does the season start?
The Gloucester Hockey Association House League Regular Season is scheduled to begin Saturday, October 3th. As soon as evaluations are satisfactorily completed, practice times through the rest of September will be allocated to each team.
What are “Team Fees”?
Once teams are formed, in addition to the registration fees you will have paid, your team will also be collectin g team fees to help pay for the operations of your respective team over the course of the season. At the Novice and Atom levels, the maximum amount that can be sought per player is $200. Your team may also choose to do some addition fundraising as well to help pay for things such as tournament entry fees.
