In Loving Memory - Michel Breau
2024-11-02In Loving Memory - Michel Breau
It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of the GCMHA President, Michel Breau. We first want to offer our sincere condolences to his family and remind them that our hockey community is here to help, as they are an extremely important part of our extended family.
Michel fought a hard battle for quite some time due to health issues, all that while contributing to the success of our hockey program. He was extremely devoted and an amazing volunteer. The recent pilot merger was very important to him, and the work to bring our two organizations together gave him energy and hope. It was something he wanted to do to improve the hockey program for all our youth. Volunteering to help hockey made him very happy and that was especially important in the last few months of his life.
From that first day at the rink, he was always contributing to ensure kids enjoyed playing hockey and improved their skills. Gloucester Cougars was fortunate to have Michel start volunteering years ago, as part of their initiation program. As a non-parent, he gave countless hours developing kids at the entry point. As a goalie himself, he helped introduce kids to the position and provided important technical and practical advice, while ensuring that they were having fun. He was proud to watch his prodigies learn and progress.
Over the years, Michel took on more responsibilities and was quick to say yes to any and all requests. He took over the 4 on 4 spring program and brought it to new heights. When it was time for the previous GCMHA President to step down, Michel was the appropriate choice to take over and everyone agreed. He was also an integral part of the hockey outreach program that was boosted to introduce hockey to newly-arrived children from war-torn Syria. This program was such a success, that it was recognized by the Government of Canada. To this day, many kids from that program are still playing, which made Michel very proud.
Michel was that friendly face at the rink, always making jokes and bringing a smile to people’s face. The memories he created will never be forgotten and he will be fondly remembered as an outstanding volunteer and person.
He will definitely be missed and we are extremely proud to have served alongside such an extraordinary volunteer.
